An Epistle Written Unto The Christians
First, Read Genesis 39:1-20 for context.
1: She desired Joseph for his goodliness. Ezekiel preached about Aholah and Aholibah and their whoredoms. Aholibah desired the youth, the young men. Potiphar’s wife was well versed with the lust of her eyes. 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
2: She desired Joseph for his prosperity. Ezekiel again preached about Aholibah’s infatuation with the princes. Potiphar’s wife desired to have a part in the success and prosperity of Joseph. This is the pride of life.
3: She figured that she deserved Joseph, that he must lie with her and that it would be easy for her seeing as how she was his master’s wife. This is the lust of the flesh. We always want the things we can’t have because we feel that we deserve them.
4: She did not care for his life. Her actions sent Joseph to prison, that was through her lies. Prisons were not what they are today, remember that.
5: She did not care about Joseph’s soul. Jospeh asks her how he could possibly do such a wicked thing as to lie with her, as it would be a sin against God. Proverbs 8:36 But he that sinneth against God wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate God love death. He instead spoke of the graciousness of God and tried to reason with her.
6: She was a sneaky woman. She waited until there was no other man in the house when she struck. Proverbs 7:9-10 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. The serpent beguiled Eve with his subtlety. Eve was not prepared for the moment she least expected, he’ll wait until you are at your weakest, so always remain strong in the Lord.
7: She was not a desirable woman. She had no shame, even when Joseph said it would be a sin against the Lord especially after all his success. Proverbs 7:13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows. Impudent means strong shamelessness.
8: She makes sin look good. Proverbs 7:16-17 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. In this way she attempts to entice the man. James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. She is like the false prophets and heretics, the false teachers and blasphemers. They make their lies look good, they entice the senses. Will you be drawn away? David was looking at Bathsheba and not at God’s Word, and in that moment he stopped looking at Christ and focused on his lusts instead.
9: In this way she promotes the sin as godly. Proverbs 7:18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. Solace is heavenly peace. Isaiah 48:22 There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked. This woman is sensual, and desires to find spiritualism through the satisfying the carnal flesh. This makes her like unto a drug abuser, a devil worshiper, a son or daughter of Jezebel.
10: She is a betrayer. Proverbs 7:19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey. She has no respect or regard for her husband, she had no respect for Joseph, she’ll have no respect or regard for you.
11: She would have taken Joseph, if he did not run. Proverbs 7:21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. Will you allow yourself to stay in the presence of temptation, or will you escape?
12: She had a sexually transmitted disease. Proverbs 7:23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life. God’s judgement is passed on the sinner according to his sin. Romans 1 explains that the fornicator, the homosexual, and the lesbian received the recompense of their error which was meet. 1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
13: Her end is death. Proverbs 7:22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; Proverbs 7:26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
Read Proverbs 5:8-11
Read Proverbs 9:14-18
14: The end of her ways is hell. Proverbs 7:27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.
Read Proverbs 5:1-5
15: Something else you may not have noticed; she did not respond to Joseph’s refusal. Genesis 39:7-12 How many times do we refuse the temptation before we give in?
16: She was also a daily temptation. Genesis 39:10 says She was a temptation to him day by day.
We should be asking God to give us our sustenance through his word day by day. It is written in 2 Corinthians 4:16 but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. Are you being renewed day by day through God’s Word?
17: Potiphar’s wife was the tool of satan, so communion with her would be communion with satan.
Christ said you cannot serve two masters. If you are not serving Christ then you are serving satan.
Your members, your hands, your feet, your eyes, your ears can all be used to serve satan.
The flesh cannot be saved, only the soul and spirit.
This flesh is mortal and appointed to die.
This flesh is still ready to serve either satan or the Lord, it is our own choice which one we will serve. Romans 6:13
18: You also might not know that Potiphar’s wife continues to be a temptation, even to this day. Her temptation was not simply an idea, the sin would not come simply in the doing of the deed. Jesus said That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
The world around us gives enough to lust after.
Do you watch pornography? Every time you watch it you become a fornicator and adulterer and a servant of satan, and you have yielded to Potiphar’s wife.
Do you worship idols? Then you are being disobedient to God and an instrument of unrighteousness.
Do you lust after anything in this world? Every sin you commit is a sin against God, the best thing to do is flee the temptation as Joseph did. 1 Corinthians 10:13
19: Finally, the last thing I could think of that you might not know about Potiphar’s wife, is that Christ died for her sin as well as the rest of the world’s.
If we read Genesis 39:3, this states that his master recognized the power of God.
But did you know that you can recognize the power of God and still not know God? Romans 1:18-21
Christ died for sinners, but sinners must confess to Jesus Christ, believe in their hearts that God raised him from the dead, and be saved.
The sinner cannot simply witness God’s power in others lives and be saved. Potiphar’s wife witnessed the power of God in Joseph’s life, but did she go to God for salvation?
Have you gone to God for salvation? Have you asked for forgiveness? Or are you following Potiphar’s wife to hell?
Repent and escape the death of hell. Receive the gift of life through Christ!
