An Epistle Written Unto the Christians
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord
Ephesians 6:4
As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children
1 Thessalonians 2:11
Where did the fathers go, who would teach their children about the Lord Jesus Christ? Who would not entrust the teaching of their children to strangers who purport themselves as teachers? Who would not settle for their children learning about Christ only in the Church, but at home as well? Who would sit with the children and teach them that God came down from Heaven in the form of man, to die for them on the cross, to die for their sins? Who would teach them that he rose again three days later for our justification? Who would teach their children to get themselves ready, so that they may go to meet in God’s house?
Where did the fathers go, who would keep their children guarded from the evil of the world, not allowing them to dwell with the children of the devil? Who would keep their children guarded from the foolishness of the world, the vanity, the movies, the video games, the television shows, and the literature of the world, for who else will guard them? Who would bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the LORD, and not provoke them to anger and confusion? Who would not spare the rod for crying, for he knew that to do so would be to hang the child over hell’s flames? Who would actually spend time with the children, instead of playing the same wicked games, watching the same wicked movies, and wasting time in the same wicked hobbies as he allows of them?
Where did the fathers go, who would dwell with the mothers according to knowledge? Who understood that it is not the mother’s responsibility to raise a child, but the mother’s and the father’s? Who would teach their sons how to treat a woman, for who else shall teach them, this hellish world? Who would be satisfied with their wives, setting an example for the children that divorce is against the LORD? Who would sit with the children’s mother and pray with her, give her loves, and refrain from the same foolishness and vanity not unlike that which has taken the youth of the present? Who would sit with the children and the mother and read the Holy Word of God together in sweet fellowship? Who would speak with his wife’s parents and have fellowship with them as well?
Where did the fathers go, who would bring the family to Church, not missing or forsaking any time that the Church is assembled, to show a faithful example to the children? Who would remember their own fathers and mothers, and not forget them in the successes of this life? Who would teach their children the songs of the saints and the hymns of the brethren, who died long ago but whose words and music can still touch the weeping heart? Who would help the children in learning about the Lord, and staying encouraged in him, by reading his word and listening to Biblical music?
Where did the fathers go, who would obey God in all his commandments, and do the job that God has called him to do? Who would be a servant to the brethren, not raised up in pride, but humble and careful with all doctrine and charity? Who would help in the Church, being the member that God has set him aside to be, instead of wasting time being a friend to the world? Who would speak with the Pastor when he has taught a wrong thing in the Church? Who would speak to the Pastor when he needs encouragement and strength? Who would desire to strengthen the Pastor, as well as every member of the body, when they are in sore need of prayer and fellowship? Who would help the Pastor, for the Pastor is always in need of friendship?
Where did the fathers go, who would own the responsibilities that God has given him? Who would exhort the brethren with wisdom from the word of Christ? Who would desire to dispel confusion and every work of darkness, and give the lost the light of Christ? Who had the zeal and patience for the hour that God has given him to exercise them? Who would not simply be fathers in name only, but in deed and in truth?
Where did the Christian fathers go? For who else could do these here, except Christ be in him? Where did the Christian fathers go, and why have they purposely disguised themselves as the wicked fathers of this world, hoping that the LORD will not recognize them, and rebuke them? Where did the Christian fathers go, who would care more for the things of God, than vanity? Where did the Christian fathers go, and why do they dwell in unholy matrimony with satan, doing his work with swiftness, raising the next generation as children of the devil? Where did the Christian fathers go, and when will they return to the fold of God?
Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
